Voice Controlled Home Automation

Ashish P. Bhalerao

Abstract

This paper presents the proposal, design and implementation of a microcontroller based voice controlled wireless automation system. Voice control technology is gaining popularity in development of various electronics products. It allows for greater flexibility and convenience in the operation of electronic appliances. As speech is the preferred mode of operation for human being, this project intends to make the voice oriented command words for controlling multiple home appliances. In this project, a voice recognition module HM2007 has been used to recognize and store voice commands. The system is ramified into two parts transmitting section and receiving section. Initially, the voice command is stored in the static RAM with the help of function keys available on the voice recognition kit. Then the input voice command is processed in the voice recognition module where the unique features of the voice command such as tone, amplitude etc. are extracted and compared with the existing samples in the memory and produces 8-bit data accordingly. This 8-bit data is send to the microcontroller at transmitter side where a lookup table is created in the PIC 18F4520 microcontroller memory, assigning particular value to data and using serial communication technique controller send it to CC2500 RF transmitter for wireless transmission. At RF receiver, data is received and send it to microcontroller at receiver side, where controller matches the received data with predefined values in memory and switches the respective appliances via interfaced relays with microcontroller. This concept is especially useful for the disabled or infirm as it provides them a way to control their home appliances remotely through voice, thereby granting them greater independence in their homes.
