Assisting Students with Visual Impairment

K.S. Bhagat, Deepali J. Patil, Dr.P.B. Patil

Abstract

Total blindness is the inability to see, or the total inability to relate light from black. Visual impairment (low vision) is a severe reduction that cannot be corrected with contact lenses or standard glasses and reduces a person's ability to function at certain or all tasks.

In all areas of education visual aids are used extensively. When it comes to conveying the idea, verbal communication is not sufficient. But our traditional teachers use the methods which involve the use of black or white boards, projectors and other types of visual demonstration to support verbal explanations. Generally the visual impairments or low vision can be categorized into three divisions such as Blurred vision, Localized vision degeneration and Reduction in colour/contrast perception.

By comparing different divisions of image enhancement for visual impairment, we proposed wiener filter for blurred vision, pixel replication for localized vision degeneration and logarithmic transformation for reduction in colour/contrast perception.
