Impairment-Aware Provisioning Algorithm in Optical Networks with Regeneration

Abstract


The demand for high bandwidth communication applications is satisfied by optical communication networks. Optical communication networks are capable of providing enormous bandwidth at lower bit error rate. However, the signals carried by optical communication networks can be affected by the transmission impairments caused by fiber dispersion, fiber non-linearities, optical amplifiers and optical components used in optical networks. Fiber non-linearities and non-ideal optical components will introduce cross talk, and it will interfere with the desired signals. The noise introduced by optical amplifiers will affect the received SNR. Hence it is important to consider the Physical Layer Impairments (PLI) during the routing of connection request. A new bit error rate performance estimation in combination with the PLI-aware WRA are utilized in order to systematically investigate the role of regeneration and wavelength conversion in optical networks and impairment-aware wavelength routing algorithms are developed to route the connections in such a way that the effect of transmission impairments are minimized. Performance evaluation shows the effectiveness of the proposed approach in reducing blocking probability.
