Modeling and Simulation of EPON based Symmetric FTTH Access Network

Vishal Sharma, Amrita Tyagi

Abstract

Longer reach and higher splits along with high speed is the future demands of a next-generation access (NGA) system and such systems can be envisaged as Passive Optical Network (PON) technology. In this paper, the performance of a long-reach EPON based symmetric FTTH system with eight splits has been investigated on the performance metrics viz. eye-diagram, eye-opening Factor, Q Factor, extinction ratio (ER) and SNR. In our demonstrated EPON based FTTH access network, the downstream channel at 622Mbps-1Gbps is transmitted from OLT to ONUs over a SSMF up to 40 Km at operating wavelength of 1550 nm. The same SSMF fiber is used for upstream transmission of channels at operating wavelength of 1300 nm. Results obtained with acceptable Q Factor, eye opening, SNR and extinction ratio at minimum power transmission without using any amplifier in upstream- and downstream-mode simultaneously confirm the feasibility of proposed long-reach EPON based symmetric FTTH system.
