Abstract

The purpose of a flood warning service is to detect and forecast threatening flood events so that the public can be alerted in advance and can undertake appropriate responses to minimize the impact of the event. This is a particularly important technology in developing countries, where flooding results in massive loss of life and property. Predicting the flood before its actual occurrence is needed to evacuate the inhabitants of towns in the path of a flood, preventing loss of life and their property. Once an event exceeds a given threshold, a warning will be issued. This message is likely to be disseminated to the „at risk‟ population via a number of channels. The media, services such as the police and fire departments and basic signals such as sirens and flags all have important roles to play [1]. This paper explains the design of a flood warning system based on FBUS Protocol. The float switches are placed at different water levels in a reservoir and the position status of the switches are transmitted from the reservoir to the Base station (Emergency management Station) using FBUS Protocol and the GSM technology. This protocol specifies a way to establish the communication between the rescue area and the Base station. The main criteria considered in design of this system are reliability, provision of early alerts.
