The Performance Measurement of Six Sigma Manufacturing System through Overall Equipment Effectiveness

A. Kumaravadivel, C. Ilamparithi, B. Selvam

Abstract

The main objective of this study is to measure the performance after the implementation of six sigma. Customers demand product quality, and insist on product delivery time and cost of product. Hence a company has to introduce a quality system to improve and increase both quality and productivity continuously. A study is carried out in a casting based manufacturing plant which currently implements the six sigma concept for achieving higher customer satisfaction. The aim of the paper is to measure the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) of the existing process and investigations are undertaken. The tangible and intangible Performance Indicators (PIs) are introduced in order to identify the effectiveness and efficiency of the system. Moreover, the critical success factors for achieving Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) are also included based on the practical results gained from the study. The effectiveness of the approach is subsequently evaluated and the benefits the host organization received through this new approach by measuring OEE in the six sigma environment are analyzed.
