Reducing Eavesdropping Risk by Transmission Power Control in Ad hoc Networks

Abstract


To defend against reconnaissance activity in ad hoc wireless networks, this project addresses transmission power control and it will be used as an effective mechanism for minimizing the eavesdropping risk. First, wth   order eavesdropping risk will be found as the maximum probability of packet being eavesdropped, when there are w adversarial nodes in the network. Second, closed form solution of first order eavesdropping risk will be formed. The existing  defense  mechanisms  against  the  hear-and-fire  attacks  in ad  hoc  wireless  networks  can  be  categorized  into  cryptographic techniques, secure routing and anonymous routing. The cryptographic techniques facilitate the design of secure and anonymous routing protocols in the presence of adversarial nodes.  A cryptography based method causes high overhead in terms of processing delay, packet size, and energy consumption. The proposal for transmission power control for security improvement has effects on throughput, energy conservation, and quality-of-service support. In this project, eavesdropping risk, throughput, and energy conservation will be measured by changing transmission power of the nodes. The transmission   power   control   capability   is necessary for connectivity and energy conservation, but at   the   same   time, this   provides   an   opportunity   for improving the network security.
